How to Set Up Drip Irrigation: A Step-by-Step Guide

You don’t need plumbing skills to set up drip irrigation — especially with a kit. Follow these steps to get your garden watering efficiently.

Step 1: Plan your layout

Sketch where your plants are and how the tubing will reach them. Note the tap location and roughly measure the tubing length you’ll need.

Step 2: Connect at the tap

Attach the main connector to your tap, ideally with a filter (to stop drippers clogging) and, if you want automation, a tap timer. A pressure reducer helps if your water pressure is high.

Step 3: Lay the main tube

Run the main supply tube along your beds, rows, or pots, keeping it close to the plants. Secure it with pegs or stakes so it stays put.

Step 4: Add drippers and micro-tubing

Punch holes in the main tube and insert drippers near each plant, or run thin micro-tubing to individual pots. Place one or more drippers at each plant’s root zone.

Step 5: Flush, then close the end

Before sealing the tube’s end, run water through to flush out any debris that could clog drippers. Then cap the end.

Step 6: Test and adjust

Turn on the water and check every dripper is flowing and there are no leaks at the joints. Adjust the flow so each plant gets what it needs — more for big plants, less for small pots.

Step 7: Automate with a timer

Fit a tap timer to water automatically at the best times — early morning or evening. Now your garden waters itself, even when you’re away.
