The most common issue with drip irrigation is drippers clogging — leading to dry plants and uneven watering. The good news: it’s largely preventable. Here’s how.

Always use a filter

This is the single most important step. Fit a filter at the tap to catch dirt, grit, and particles before they reach the drippers. Most clogging comes from debris the filter would have stopped.

Flush the system regularly

Open the end of the main tube and let water run through to flush out sediment that builds up inside. Do this periodically, especially after dusty spells, to keep the lines clear.

Watch out for hard water

In hard-water areas, mineral deposits build up and block drippers. Periodically clean the drippers, and consider drippers designed to resist mineral clogging.

Clean clogged drippers

If a dripper clogs, remove it and rinse it out, or soak it to dissolve mineral build-up. Clear the tiny outlet gently — never force a sharp object that could damage it.

Keep the tube ends sealed but openable

Keep line ends capped during use (so pressure stays up) but able to open for flushing. Open and flush them now and then to clear debris.

Choose quality, clog-resistant drippers
